UPSC IAS Syllabus & Exam Pattern

This exam is conducted in three stages, the first stage is Prelims (Multiple Choice), the second stage is Mains (Descriptive) and the last stage is Interview.

IAS Prelims Syllabus Exam Pattern

Under this there are 2 exams. In which the first exam is General Studies and the second exam is CSAT. To reach Mains, it is necessary to clear both these Prelims exams. To clear the General Studies exam, merit is made while 33% marks are required in CSAT.

There is a negative marking in both the exams and marks will be deducted for the wrong answers. Through the table given below, you can get a better understanding of the exam pattern-

UPSC Syllabus – General Studies

Under this exam questions are asked from General Studies (Indian Polity, Geography, History, Indian Economy, Science and Technology, Environment and Ecology, International Relations, and Current Affairs.

In this, questions like reasoning and analytical, reading comprehension, decision making, etc. are asked.

UPSC IAS Mains Exam Pattern and Syllabus

UPSC Syllabus – After successfully passing the prelims one has to take the mains exam which is descriptive. There are mainly 9 papers and only 7 papers are taken into account while making merit. 2 papers Language (2 papers in 300 marks, it is necessary to get at least 25% marks to qualify) and remaining 7 papers are General Studies and Essay.

Paper A is not mandatory for candidates from the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim. And also a candidate can prove that he/she was not made an alternate language or a second/3rd language compulsory by the Board or the University.

Indian language paper can choose any language included in the 8th schedule of the constitution.
